- The Grotto of Our Lady of Ascension was filled with Island folks who wanted to be a part of remembering the Americans who have contributed so much to the history of Ascension Island, especially those who lost their lives here during World War II.

- On the 30th of March 2008, the Ascension Island Heritage Society held a Day of Remembrance to commemorate the contribution of Americans to the history of Ascension.

- As usual, this past week I’ve been doing a lot of hiking. Wandering around the heritage sites of this island is fascinating.
Battle of Britain Sunday


- Again, on this island with a British military base, Battle of Britain Sunday has come around. It is a day of remembrance and of giving thanks, no matter how much time has gone by since the actual event.

- This past week I was privileged to hear Dr. Bill Hardy, our locum doctor speak on his personal experiences in his home country of South Africa with the terrible scourge of HIV and AIDS. Unfortunately there were not a lot of people in attendance, mostly medical personnel.

- This past weekend, I had the opportunity to observe the ship operations up close. I was asked to take photographs for an article in the Wideawake News, the recently resurrected US Base newspaper. I readily agreed, since anyone who knows me well knows that I love the water, and being on any type of boat or ship.

Thoughts from Our Lady of the Grotto


- This weekend I was hiking with a couple of friends. We were in Goat Hole Ravine, the site of one of the new letterboxes being established by the Heritage Society. On the way back I had a bit of tumble.

- It was a devastating event that came as a shock to everyone. It shows us just how fragile life is, how we never know when we will be gone from this world, and leave our friends and loved ones stricken with a grief that is painful to see.

- This week we held Remembrance Day ceremonies at St. Mary’s Church. This is a tradition that has been going on since the end of the First World War. It is a tribute to those fallen soldiers who gave their lives in the cause of freedom in all wars.

- This past week, I was once again watching a documentary about my eldest daughter (which has been nominated for a rather prestigious award – how proud am I??). This was made as she went through a very difficult time in her life, and in the family’s. It is hard to watch, but it reminded me once again of how very proud I am of her, and my entire family.

- Today is my precious grandson Dominik’s very first birthday. Last year he was our wonderful Christmas present. He continues to bring a joy to the family that cannot be measured. To his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family he is the light of our lives.

- Well, here it is, the start of a new year, and a new decade. The parties are over, the toasts have all been made, resolutions made, and maybe some already broken! You know, the usual resolutions: eat better, exercise more, lose weight.

- This past week my family followed my daughter Maggie and her husband Aaron’s trip across Canada on Facebook. They have moved over 3,000 miles to a town in northern Alberta to start a new life. Maggie has taken a job as a nurse in the hospital there and Aaron is continuing his studies.
